Digger Gets Lost

About This Story

This story is about what to do when feeling panic and fear

  • Have you ever felt scared when all of a sudden you realize you might be lost?

  • In this story, Digger finds himself lost deep underground.

Digger Gets Lost

Digger the Mole loved to dig. One day, while digging faster and deeper than he had ever done before, he suddenly realized he didn't know where he was.

He felt a pang in his stomach, not knowing what to do. He thought, “If I keep going, I might get even more lost.” "Help!" Digger squeaked, feeling scared in the dark, twisty tunnels.

Several tunnels above, Dad Mole heard Digger’s soft cry for help. Dad Mole dug through the earth with his strong claws, and followed the path that Digger had dug. "I'm here, Digger!" he called out.

Feeling a big wave of relief, Dad gave Digger a big, warm nuzzle when he found him. "It's okay to explore son, but when you do, remember to leave yourself clues along the way so you can find your way home. Don’t forget you can travel backwards just as easily as you travel forwards.” “And, Digger, one more thing, I will always find you, if you lose your way," Dad said softly.

Together, they made their way back home, Dad leading the way. Digger felt safe, knowing Dad was there to help him when he was scared.

Digger planned ahead on his future digs, noticing each time he started a new tunnel. He used his claws to write symbols on the cave walls, so he could find his way back. He also carried a whistle in his jacket pocket, just in case.

The End

Let’s talk about the story

  • Although it looks like moles do not have ears, their ears are actually covered by fur, and they are sensitive to sound and vibration. Do you like loud sounds?

  • Moles can do somersaults and are able to run backwards or forwards. Can you design an obstacle course and pretend you are a mole in underground tunnels?

  • Digger did not like getting lost. What did he do differently after his dad rescued him?

  • Do you think Digger became more mindful and planned ahead better on future digs?
